I think I discovered a (very niche) genre that I really like: autobiographical graphic novels. After having read this and 'Uncomfortably Happy', by Hong Yeon-sik, I think there's something I really enjoy about them. They aren't autobiographies by any means (they seem to deal with just a certain period, and are obviously non-exhaustive and just give a broad overview), but they help to get a quick feel for what the author experienced, and the graphics help because I don't overlay my own imagery, but see what the author saw and remembers. I'm not sure if that explanation made sense, but suffice it to say that I enjoyed this book a great deal and I look forward to reading more in this niche genre, if I can find any. 

I may even visit Fishs Eddy the next time I'm in New York, even though I confess it's not my style of store.

Review: Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World, Vol. 1

This was recommended as a graphic novel that was reminiscent of a Murakami book. I can see why they said that, but it wasn't really the case. 

Regardless, it was interesting. I like how there doesn't seem to be any real overarching plot, but just a series of adventures. It makes this a relaxing and interesting read. If I happen across other volumes I'll get them. I may even order some in the near future. I'll see.

Review: Uncomfortably Happily

I think I'm starting to really enjoy graphic novels. Granted, I've read very few of them, so I am super picky when I do. But regardless, this was a fun, endearing novel. The characters are by no means perfect, and sometimes downright unlikeable, but always quite relatable, especially as the story progresses. 

Either way, it seems long (at 572 pages), but it was a great read. 

5 stars.

Review: Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned

I read graphic novels about once per year, and this was a good one to read. I like the premise, that all men are suddenly gone, and how the world spirals into chaos. Many commenters think that's sexist. It might be, but I think losing 50% of the world's population all at once would be chaotic no matter what, not to mention the fact that there is no more procreation so the human race will end (especially with the gangs blowing up sperm banks). If all women died at the same time we'd have the same issues. 

Anyway, having said all that, it still seemed a tad dystopic, given how often violence and gangs just seem to be misplaced machismo, so getting rid of all the men would probably be good in that respect. 

I might pick up the next volume at some point soon. We'll see.
