Review: A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories

A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories by Lucia Berlin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have to be honest and say I was going to give up on this book several times. Many of the stories are extremely similar, with the same characters going through the same ordeals. So much so that it is difficult to tell certain stories apart. Of course, what this also does is create a very good sense of what Lucia Berlin's life was like (she says you can't know her life from her writing, but it certainly seems so, much more than any other author I can think of).

The repetitiveness gets to be quite a bit, as well as some of the despair and sad endings. However, dispersed throughout there are fresh, different stories (albeit never with especially happy endings, if any at all).

The language, metaphors and analogies are excellent throughout.
