I've read too many books with an excellent premise but lousy follow-through. In essence the author had a great idea for a setting, but didn't know what to do with it.
This was not the case at all. The premise was interesting and the story more than held up. In fact, it was different from any other book/movie I've seen addressing similar topics.
Anyway, I'm trying to comment without spoilers, but it is quite difficult. Let's just say it's a very good, short story. If you manage to find the book it's well worth the read.
